As part of our keen desire to see the development of sport in Zimbabwe, we are playing our own small part in supporting local teams and various sports including Rugby.
In 2022 alone we have partnered with the Lady Sables 15s’ Rugby Team as one of the key sponsors for their Rugby Africa Cup Women’s 15s tournament campaign. The team did well winning one match and losing another in their pool.
We also partnered the U20 Boys Rugby Team in their World Rugby U20’s International Series in Canada as a sponsor. The team also did well showing future potential for the future of the sport. They came second after winning 2 of their 3 matches.
At Firstlink we believe that partnerships between corporates and local sporting bodies generally help give access to players from across the country who may have not been able to participate in sports like rugby due to the specialised nature of the equipment required. This ensures that more young people are able to benefit from playing and to carry our national flag with pride. A case in point is the Lady Sables 15s’ team where a number of best players on the team came from disadvantaged backgrounds and would not have been able to cover costs for airfares and the like on their own.
Commercial sponsorship is an established feature of financing in sports globally but more needs to be done in Zimbabwe to ensure the long-term viability of various sporting disciplines. We are helping develop a community of sponsors with like-minded business of all sizes to come together to form a safety net of support around local sports teams like Rugby especially around the less prominent teams. Overtime such a greater business community will be able to do more for the sport rather than any one sponsor can do on their own.
