It’s game time with the kids currently on holiday. However, with online games comes the heightened cyber risks that could affect not only the kids devices but all those connected on the same network. Interaction within the gaming world is increasing, and now includes voice chats as well as AR and VR games. Cybersecurity and social-related threats remain concerns in children’s gaming. Here are a few tips to keep the young ones safe:
Generally, for young kids its best that they play online against people they know like cousins, friends or other relatives.
Play with them so that you approve of appropriate games and also check for extra online purchases. Even with age ratings, some games may have links that lead to inappropriate stuff.
Some games let players turn off communications features, mute voice chat and report other players who behave inappropriately. Most major games consoles have settings that prevent children from finding inappropriate games. You can set limits on play time and prevent them from speaking to unknown players.
Griefers are gamers who deliberately try to ruin the game for other players. This may escalate into cyber bullying. Teach your child to be wary of games where there is rampant griefing.
As a general rule, do not link your bank cards to any game that your kids play because in the heat of “winning” or going to the “next level” they will make purchases. Scammers may also try to trick kids into giving up ‘skins’ or other in-game items by offering them money or by hacking their account so train them to be careful when they are using these in-game purchases or trades.
Let them enjoy their games this holiday season with an extra cyber security awareness.
